I started painting on canvas today. This one will be 48"x30" and is about as big as my easel can take. Here is the painting as it exists right now.
Te see the step by step process read on after the break. This painting as well as all my other work is or will be available in Fine Art Prints on my website. Check it out when you have the time.
I will continue painting the grisaille until I am satisfied with the detail and the tonal range and then I will switch over to oils for the color work.
This is the pencil drawing on the canvas.
Here I did a very thin wash with burnt umber, raw sienna and a lot of matte medium to seal in the drawing and give me a neutral base to do the grisaille over.
I decided I wanted a bigger bowl and I wanted it to stick up over the table top
to add some more dimension.
I also lowered the table top more and started painting in the darkest shadow areas.
Here I painted in the mid tones and some highlights. It's hard to get good blending even with the matte medium and a little water. I find it is easier to work in one section at a time and blend as I go. I'm still happy with how it's going and know I can always blend better in the oil layers.
I think it's time to refine my idea for the people in the bowl so that will be my next task while I continue roughing in the paint.
